Libya forces US official into apology for Gaddafi joke

Libya has accepted an apology from a senior US official who made a joke about Muammar Gaddafi.

Chief State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said he was sorry for his remarks about Colonel Gaddafi's call for jihad against Switzerland after it voted to ban mosque minarets.

Libya threatened diplomatic repercussions if it did not receive an apology for the comments. Mr Crowley had said Col Gaddafi's comments on Switzerland were "not necessarily a lot of sense", reffering to the Libyan leader's speech at the UN last year.

A Libyan foreign ministry statement today said it accepted the apology and welcomed resumption of visits.
