'Little angel', six, stabbed in chest in Surrey knife attack

12 April 2012

A six-year-old girl in hospital after being stabbed in the chest was described as a "little angel" by neighbours today.

She was left seriously injured after the incident in Rowan Close on the Bellfields Estate in Guildford, Surrey, and was in a stable condition in hospital.

A 44-year-old woman also received stab wounds to her hand, and a 28-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The suspects were both in police custody, while the girl was being treated in Guildford's Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Today neighbours said the girl lived at the two-storey, end-of-terrace house with those under arrest, although their relationship to her has not been confirmed.

Adam Howlett, 35, a yardman for Guildford Borough Council who lives six doors away, said: "They are very quiet, normal people.

"I came in quite late and I heard raised voices from inside the house. I looked out of my window but I couldn't see anything.

"I then saw loads of police turning up. When I heard a girl had been stabbed I was shocked, very shocked.

"It's not the sort of thing that you expect to happen on your doorstep. It's a little bit rough round here but no rougher than any other places.

"The people have been living here for at least a couple of years.

"The girl was a little angel, a little princess. She's a happy girl who would play on the grass outside."

Two police officers stood guard outside the property, which was surrounded by police tape, as forensic officers in white suits carried out inquiries inside.

Another resident, Joanne McDermott, 27, a mother of two, said: "It's scary. When something like this happens so close to your own home, it's worrying."

Surrey Police said officers were called to the address just after midnight "following a report that a six-year-old girl had received stab wounds to her chest".

The force added: "The child, whose injuries are described as serious, and a 44-year-old woman who received stab wounds to her hand, were taken to Royal Surrey County hospital where the child's condition is described as stable.

"A 28-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and have been taken into custody."
