Londoners fear cost of Olympics

Support for hosting the Olympics drops substantially when the cost is explained to Londoners.

A YouGov poll in tomorrow's Economist shows that while some 53 per cent back the bid in principle, support drops to 44 per cent when it is explained that the average London household will be charged at least £200 extra in council tax over 10 years and that £1.5 billion of Lottery cash will also be needed.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the 2012 London bid, has to secure transport improvements including the East London Tube line extension and a major Jubilee line upgrade.
