A businessman arrested on suspicion of killing an intruder at his home has been freed on bail.

Vincent Cooke, 39, was quizzed for 12 hours in connection with the death of Raymond Jacob. Mr Cooke was at home alone in his four-bedroom house in Bramhall, near Stockport, when Mr Jacob and another man reportedly tried to force their way in.

Mr Cooke challenged them and Mr Jacob, 37, suffered stab wounds. The second man fled the scene in a white van. Mr Cooke, who runs a courier firm, dialled 999 but paramedics were unable to revive Mr Jacob.

A 33-year-old man was being held today on suspicion of aggravated burglary. Mr Cooke was bailed until October 17 pending further inquiries.
