Man bundled into car and shot in legs

13 April 2012

A 32-year-old man was shot in both legs after he was forced into a car by a gang in an apparently targeted attack, police said today.

The man was discovered seriously injured at a roadside in Great Stretton, on the outskirts of Leicester, after he managed to flag down a passing motorist last night.

The shooting is the second to hit the city in a week after 60-year-old Amratlal Kanabar was murdered by a gunman in a passing car on his way home from a Nottingham casino.

The man, from Leicester, was found just after 10pm on Gartree Road after it is believed he was forced into a car by three men.

He was spotted by a passing motorist who raised the alarm and cared for him until the emergency services arrived.

He was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated for gunshot wounds to both legs. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Chief Inspector Phil Taylor, of Leicestershire Police, said: "We are in the very early stages of our investigation. However it does appear that the victim was specifically singled out.

"I would appeal for anyone who was in the Great Stretton area between 9.30pm and 10.30pm to think back. It may be that they have vital information that could help with our inquiries."

The area has been cordoned off to allow forensic examination to take place.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the attack on Mr Kanabar, from Wigston, Leicester, who was shot in the head following a 100mph car chase last week.

He was with three friends travelling in a red Nissan Primera on their way home from the Gala casino in Nottingham when they were chased by another car along the A46.

A man and a woman are believed to have been in a small blue car which pulled up alongside them as they reached Melton Road in Leicester and shot Mr Kanabar through the window.

The back seat passenger was found by officers after his friends pulled into a nearby police station. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His family last week told a press conference of their "disgust" at the rising tide of gun crime which has spread to the city.
