Man dies after rubbish tip fight

13 April 2012

A man died in hospital after a fight with another driver queuing to use a council rubbish tip, police said today.

Surveyor David Henson, 53, from Coulsdon, Surrey, visited the waste site in Epsom, Surrey, on Sunday afternoon with his partner to offload unwanted possessions piled into his Vauxhall Astra.

Both he and his partner are understood to have grown-up children from previous relationships and were throwing out rubbish ahead of moving in together.

Between around 2.30pm and 2.45pm, Mr Henson became involved in a fight with a silver-haired BMW driver in his late 50s over a space in the long queue to get into the Blenheim Road tip.

The fight left Mr Henson with a series of injuries including a broken arm. He was driven by his partner to Epsom General Hospital where he died from heart failure two days later.

Police are now looking for the other motorist, who was driving a silver BMW estate car.

He is described as a white man in his late 50s or early 60s between 5ft 7in and 5ft 8in. He may have been wearing glasses.

Surrey Police have also issued a plea for other drivers who may have seen the fight to come forward.

Police are particularly keen to speak to a woman who spoke to Mr Henson's partner for some time at the tip and is likely to have seen what took place.

Detective Inspector Helen Collins said: "This is a particularly tragic incident and we are pursuing several lines of inquiry to try to establish the sequence of events that happened at the refuse tip.

"The incident occurred last Sunday afternoon, which is a popular time for householders to visit this council refuse site.

"There was a very long queue of cars and there must be several people who saw what happened.

"We are eager to speak to the driver of a silver BMW estate car and are making this direct appeal for him to come forward to speak to us as soon as possible."
