Man faces canal bodies murder trial

A man appeared via video link at the Old Bailey today to deny murdering two women whose bodies were found in canals in London and Holland.

John Sweeney, 53, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody to face trial next year. He is alleged to have murdered Paula Fields, 31, and Melissa Halstead, 33.

The dismembered body of Ms Fields was found in the Regent's Canal, Camden, in 2001 while Ms Halstead's remains were discovered in Rotterdam in 1990.
