A man was “tarred and feathered” as he lay drunk on a bench in Romford.

Passers-by found the 58-year-old covered in a sticky black substance and feathers outside the Tesco supermarket on Roneo Corner.

Police were called to the scene at 6.10pm on Sunday and the man was taken by ambulance to an east London hospital.

He was treated in a specialist unit and has now been released.

John Hercock, 66, from Hornchurch, saw the mess left behind after the incident and said: “Staff in the shop told me that someone had been tarred and feathered.”

Det Sgt Robert Baxter said: “This is a horrible crime – if anyone has any information in relation to this incident, or who may have seen something suspicious at this time on Sunday, can they please contact us.”

Havering CID can be contacted on 101, while information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
