Man jailed for killing gay hairdresser

12 April 2012

A man with a long criminal history was on bail when he murdered a homosexual hairdresser who stroked his leg, a court heard today.

Rodney Greenland, 47, repeatedly stabbed 36-year-old Simon Amers last July, shortly after being accused of racially aggravated assault and threatening behaviour and being freed pending further court hearings, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Greenland was jailed for a minimum of 18 years after a jury found him guilty of murder following a trial.

Greenland had admitted manslaughter but denied murder.

The court was told that the men met in a pub then went to Mr Amers' flat for a drink.

Greenland told detectives that he "flipped" when Mr Amers touched him.

Greenland told police that he felt "no remorse" but was sorry for dead man's dog.
