Man quizzed over murders

Police at the scene of the Highgate killings
A JOBLESS man accused of savagely murdering an elderly couple in their home was today remanded into police custody to be questioned over two other killings.

Daniel Gonzalez, 24, is alleged to have stabbed Derek and Jean Robinson to death shortly after they finished

breakfast on Friday at their three-bedroom house on a private north London estate.

Dr Robinson, 75, a retired consultant paediatrician, and his wife Jean, 68, a retired music teacher, were discovered by a decorator in the hall of their home in Makepeace Avenue, on the Holly Lodge Estate in Highgate Hill.

Gonzalez, of Southwood Avenue, Woking, appeared at a brief hearing at Highbury Corner magistrates' court this morning.

The suspect spoke only to confirm his name and address and was not required to enter pleas to two counts of murder.

Tim Burton, prosecuting, told the court that police hope he will assist with enquiries into two other murders. Deputy District Judge Ian Baker agreed that the suspect could be questioned in relation to the other matters and remanded him in police custody for three days to be quizzed at Holborn police station.

Dr Robinson had been retired for 10 years and the couple had two daughters, one of whom lived in Scotland and another in London.

They were grandparents and were both involved in humanitarian work in Africa. They were also active in their local neighbourhood watch scheme.

Mr Baker ordered Gonzalez to return to the same court for a hearing on Thursday.

It is understood that he will be questioned in connection with the murder of a former pub landlord found stabbed to death on a street in Tottenham on Friday.

Kevin Molloy, 46, was found with multiple injuries by a pedestrian at 5.40am.

The suspect will also be asked to assist with inquiries into the killing of a 73-year-old grandmother who was found stabbed in Southwick, West Sussex, last Wednesday.

It is believed the woman suffered fatal injuries as she walked to her home from her daughter's house nearby.
