Man's fight to save baby

A father of six today told an Old Bailey jury how he fought to save the life of a baby said to have been murdered by a teenage au pair.

Everton Price described how the " nervous and frightened" au pair had raised the alarm and he found Jonathan Adeleye fatally injured in his cot.

Ewa Nowakowska was 19 when she was said to have fractured the child's skull with a blow to his head or by shaking him to death.

The Polish au pair, now aged 20, told police the baby accidentally rolled off a bed onto the floor after she put him there to sleep.

Nowakowska had been employed by Sarah and Abraham Adeleye at their Harlesden home since Jonathan, known as "Chunky" was five months old.

On the night Jonathan was fatally injured last June, the au pair had run next door for help sobbing: "If anything happens to Jonathan I'll kill myself."

Today, neighbour Mr Price said he followed her to the house but could not wake the baby. "The baby was in the cot but it was moving on its back, both hands were clenched and it was wriggling. It was breathing abnormally. .

"I picked the baby up and tried to wake him but its eyes stayed closed. I could see its eyes were focused but I know from experience as a father the eye is normally rolled back. Its hands and feet were really pale."

The court heard that Nowakowska put her hands over her face and cried: "I can't handle this, I can't deal with this."

Nowakowska, denies murder and manslaughter.

The trial continues.
