Mayor criticised over St George's day

Ken Livingstone was yesterday accused of using today's St George's Day celebrations to win votes - and also of not spending enough on the celebrations.

The London Mayor has said he is splashing out about £100,000 on events to honour the patron saint of England.

But Lib Dem mayoral candidate Simon Hughes claimed it was no coincidence the decision to mark the day came a month before the mayoral elections, saying: 'Londoners must ask if this is a way of spending money on a re-election bid.'

But Tory candidate Steve Norris added: 'Ken spent lots on St Patrick's Day but next to nothing on St George's.'
