Men die in vat of slurry

13 April 2012

The bodies of three men were recovered from vat of liquid slurry, the fire service said today.

Fire crews pulled three men from the 12ft deep vat which is believed to have contained chicken waste to be used as fertiliser. They were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Emergency services were called to the farm off the A1075 Watton Road at Great Hockham, near Thetford, Norfolk, at around 8am this morning.

A Health and Safety Executive spokeswoman said the men had been involved in a mobile slurry-spraying operation at the farm.

She said mobile tanks were used to spray the slurry on the fields and were being operated by Thetford-based firm Enviro-Waste Ltd.

A police spokeswoman said the deaths were not being treated as suspicious and a joint investigation has been launched with the HSE. Two HSE inspectors were working at the site.
