Monty 'racially abused' by Australian crowd

13 April 2012

England are refusing to be deflected from their Ashes focus by reports that racial taunts have been aimed from the Australian crowd at Monty Panesar.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph reports a spectator called out to Panesar while the left-arm spinner was fielding on the boundary during England's three-day warm-up match against New South Wales in Sydney.

The supporter is said to have shouted: "Give us a wave Monty. You can't speak English, you stupid Indian - I'll have to say it in Indian. "What are you doing playing in the English side? You're not English."

England have, however, made no official complaint - despite reports that Panesar and South African-born batsman Kevin Pietersen were both subjected to similar abuse during last week's opening fixture of the tour in Canberra, where eight people were ejected from the ground for unruly behaviour.

A spokesman for the England team said: "We have come out here to play the game with dignity and we expect the Australian fans will show the sportsmanship they are renowned for and hope they will respect the players both on and off the field."

Under new regulations, fans may face lifetime bans if they are found guilty of racial abuse during a match.
