More bank jobs in peril at Lloyds TSB

This Is Money13 April 2012

LLOYDS TSB put another 465 UK banking jobs at risk today after it announced plans to close operations in five locations.

The proposals affect back office administration posts and will result in the loss of 211 jobs in Swansea, as well as 126 posts in Plymouth, 38 in Cardiff, 35 in Stockton and 55 in Taunton.

The announcement comes on the heels of the confirmation today from National Australia Bank that 100 branches of the Yorkshire Bank and the Clydesdale Bank in the UK are to close.

Lloyds TSB said it would look to find alternative roles for as many staff as possible, as part of its plans to switch work to larger company sites, including offices in Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham.

It denied claims from the Lloyds TSB staff union that the job losses were linked to the company's use of offices in India, where it is expected to employ more than 2,000 people by the end of the year.

The Lloyds TSB Group Union said the larger sites were able to take the work because offshoring had created surplus capacity. It said the staff affected by today's job losses were 'victims of offshoring by proxy'.

A spokeswoman for Lloyds TSB said: 'The changes are in no way linked to offshoring.'
