‘Most beautiful’ tweet makes Hay

12 April 2012

Hay Festival organisers have revealed the "most beautiful" Twitter message in a competition.

Actor and broadcaster Stephen Fry announced the winner as Marc MacKenzie from Edmonton in Canada, who wrote under the name @marcmack: "I believe we can build a better world! Of course, it'll take a whole lot of rock, water & dirt. Also, not sure where to put it."

Fry praised the message for his humour: "We are stuck with the world we have got."

Organisers asked competitors to send their entries to the festival's account on the social networking website and said the most beautiful tweet could be the most eloquent, the most evocative or the best pun.

Minutes after he left the stage following a two-hour discussion of his life with Hay founder Peter Florence, Fry himself took to Twitter to say: "Just finished Hay event. Nearly 2 hrs on stage. Went in a flash. Now on way back to london. No time to stop and sign sadly."
