Murdered pensioner 'was leaving UK'

An 80-year-old man beaten to death in a racist attack in a London underpass had been about to move to Kenya to live with his family.

Pakistani pensioner Akberali Tayabali Mohamedally told friends last week he had saved the £1,700 he needed and would leave this summer.

The retired accountant was killed after an altercation with two men as he walked back from a pub to his home in Northolt on Friday.

Police said he was left for dead with serious head injuries after the " despicable" attack, which they are treating as raciallymotivated murder.

Friends of the widower, known as Ally, said the underpass at the White Hart roundabout is a notorious crime hotspot.

Mr Mohamedally, who lived alone in a council house, was walking home at about 7pm after visiting the White Hart pub.

Pub landlord Ron Mills said he had come in for his daily two drinks of lager before leaving for home in daylight. "Ally was telling the staff here last week that he had saved enough money to go back to his family in Kenya," Mr Mills said.

"He wanted to die with those he loved around him. Whoever did this has picked on the weakest in our community."

  • A 16-year-old boy from Northolt is due at Ealing magistrates' court today accused of murdering Mr Mohamedally. A second 16-year-old boy was bailed until later this month.
