My son wanted to stop carnival fight, says father of stabbed man

"A good boy": Rio Andre was visiting the carnival with friends

The father of the man stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival said his son was trying to stop a fight.

Rio Andre, 20, needed emergency surgery on his hands and abdomen after being knifed on Monday. His father Roy, a former professional boxer, said: "I'm in shock and raging inside. Rio was trying to break up a fight. He's lucky to be alive. He was just trying to calm things down and someone's plunged a knife in him. You hear about people getting stabbed every week now. These kids have got no respect for human life."

Rio was attacked at about 6pm in Ladbroke Grove. He lives in Hornchurch, Essex, with sister Bonita and his parents.

His father told The Sun: "We had just got home and were about to have a cup of tea when one of his mates rang, crying his eyes out. He said, 'Rio's been stabbed'. We jumped in the car and went to the hospital. An officer said he was all right. Rio has no enemies.

"He's a good boy, a caring and loving kid with a good heart who loves his sister and his mum and dad. He went to the carnival on Sunday and had a good time. He was looking forward to going back on Monday."

Rio worked in a sports shop and helps organise music events. On his Facebook page he says is a Catholic and "a laid back, calm guy, not on no beef". Five men have been arrested in connection with the stabbing. A 16-year-old remains in custody.
