National Theatre takings top £70m to defy downturn

The National Theatre is defying the downturn as audience numbers and takings soar, figures revealed today.

Productions including War Horse and Rattigan's After the Dance attracted more than 1.6 million visitors last year, today's annual report showed, with takings jumping by £6 million to more than £70 million.

Overall, audience numbers were up from 1.4 million in 2009/10.

Chairman John Makinson said: "The National Theatre has never been busier or more confident."
