New British Airways strike looms as crew reject deal

The threat of further strikes at British Airways increased today after a majority of cabin crew rejected a new pay and conditions offer.

Union bosses today held off announcing further strike dates but will discuss them in a crisis session on Monday.

BA accused the Unite union of having "callous disregard" for travellers.

About 11,000 cabin crew took part in the ballot with 81 per cent voting against the new offer, on a turnout of 71 per cent.

Tony Woodley, Unite joint general secretary, called on BA to "take note of their employees' strong rejection of their offer and immediately address the outstanding concerns".

In a clear warning of further strikes he added: "They should make no mistake that Unite is fully committed to supporting our members in furthering this dispute if no resolution is found."

Cabin crew have already staged seven days of strikes in the long-running dispute over jobs, pay and working conditions. Unite recommended rejection of BA's new offer and retains the mandate to call further stoppages, but must give seven days' notice of any action.

Relations between union bosses and the UK's largest carrier worsened after the sacking yesterday of Duncan Holley, secretary of the Unite branch which represents cabin crew.

He said he was sacked as a result of his union activities. BA refused to comment on his dismissal.

A BA spokesman said: "We urge Unite to put an end to this unnecessary dispute. There can be nothing positive to be gained from further strikes. Unlike other businesses and airlines, we have avoided compulsory redundancies. Cabin crew face no pay cut or reduction in terms and conditions — and remain the best rewarded in the UK airline industry.

"It is not too late for Unite to put an end to this dispute."
