Nightclub blaze kills 169

13 April 2012

A blaze in a crowded nightclub in Argentina killed at least 169 people and injured 375 in the early hours today.

The fire is thought to have been caused by a flare, which are sold on the streets all over Latin America for the New Year celebrations. Local media reported that as many as 5,000 to 6,000 people-may have been inside the Buenos Aires club listening to a band when the blaze broke out.

"Someone tossed a flare and immediately there were flames," said Fabian Zamudeo, 22. There was a stampede and many people fainted, suffering from smoke inhalation. It is not known if the fire exits and doors were blocked.
