Nightclubs get airport-style security

Airport-style metal detectors are being installed at nightclubs in London to combat rising gun crime in the music scene.

Up to 10 clubs in Lambeth, Southwark, Hackney, Brent, Haringey and Newham are being targeted by the Metropolitan Policefunded initiative.

It is hoped the project can be extended across the capital. It comes amid growing reports of guns fired in clubs or being carried into venues. One music promoter said most clubs which hold R&B or bashment nights have had problems.

A handgun was brandished at the recent Prince's Trust music festival at Earls Court , and thousands of people fled the Brixton Academy last month when a gunman fired into the ceiling. The Mass club in Brixton is one of the first with the new equipment.

General manager Mick Kellas said: "We now carry out three searches on the door - a body search, a metal detector arch and a hand-held metal detector."
