Nine hospital guards held in thefts probe

12 April 2012

Nine security staff have been arrested by police investigating thefts at a London hospital.

The guards, from King George Hospital in Ilford, were also questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud, and bailed until 29 June. The hospital has suspended them.

A spokesman for Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS trust said theft allegations were taken "extremely seriously".

He added: "Patient care has not been affected by these allegations."

It was revealed last week that the trust had lost more than £1.4million to foreign patients who failed to pay for treatment.

It wrote off £1.927million during 2007/08 - the second highest figure in the country behind Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
