No cancer research cuts, says Andy Burnham

The Health Secretary was today forced to give a "categorical" pledge not to slash cancer research spending to pay for Labour's free social care.

Andy Burnham issued the promise after campaigners voiced fears that cancer and dementia research work was under threat.

It follows Labour's announcement of the £670million cost of care for the elderly and disabled. Mr Burnham's department insisted that scientific research was "ring-fenced" from cuts.

"We can categorically state that cancer and dementia funding will not be affected," said a spokesman.
