Now at the Tate Modern: something I painted earlier

Quite a laugh: Paul Hayward poses with his painting on the wall
12 April 2012

An amateur artist stole 10 minutes of fame by sneaking his picture on to a wall in the Tate Modern beside a multi-million pound masterpiece.

Paul Hayward, 54, hung his work alongside the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich's acclaimed Dynamic Suprematism.

A Malevich painting sold for £39 million at Sotheby's in New York two years ago. Mr Hayward, from Kent, walked into the gallery with the picture hidden in his bag.

He said: "Two or three security guards walked past it and didn't notice so we took a photo of it. We had quite a laugh in the end."

The painting fell off the wall when the glue failed in the hot weather.
