Now serving police face random tests

Serving police officers may face compulsory random drug tests by the end of next year. The Home Office has launched a review of regulations that could lead to a tougher regime.

Some forces, including the Met, already test recruits when they enter training school. A change in the law would mean qualified officers could be tested.

Initially, the Met wants testing for those in key roles such as firearms officers, drivers and undercover officers. Any staff suspected of drug taking would also face tests. Eventually all officers would do so.

There is growing concern at the number of officers who regularly use cannabis and cocaine.
