A cash box thief was tackled by eight women pensioners during an attempted robbery of Loomis van guards in Bermondsey.

After being hit several times by the group, out shopping on Christmas Eve, he fled empty-handed. One woman, in her eighties, dealt the final blow by ramming the robber with her trolley.

She said: "There were handbags flying all over the place." The guards had been collecting takings from Superdrug.
