Officer was dragged by car at 70mph

A policeman dragged 700 yards at up to 70mph by a driver after a routine check today spoke of his terrifying ordeal.

Training Detective Constable Andy Dossett, 31, desperately held on during a struggle with Eric Fitzgerald.

Today, as Fitzgerald, of Edgware, was jailed for seven years for attempted GBH at the Old Bailey, TDC Dossett said: "I'm just relieved it's finally over."

The court heard how TDC Dossett and colleagues searched Fitzgerald, 28, but saw a man in the back of the car trying to hide something.

Fitzgerald "panicked and sped off, dragging the policeman half in and half out of the car". TDC Dossett eventually managed to pull himself into the speeding car, which then collided with another vehicle.

The policeman was unable to work for nine weeks because of his injuries. The judge said TDC Dossett should be commended.
