Olympic cyclist's wife knocked off her bike

Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins's wife has been involved in a road accident - a week after the champion cyclist blasted a car reviewer for poking fun at bike riders.

Cath Wiggins was knocked off her bike yesterday, according to posts made by her and her husband on the Twitter website.

Wiggins - who won two golds at Beijing last year and finished fourth in this year's Tour de France - wrote: "Cath Wiggins got knocked off her bike today by some silly old sod going to the garden center, Very P d Off!!!"

The 29-year-old was unavailable for comment today, according to his management agency.

Mrs Wiggins - who has two children with the athlete - wrote on her Twitter page: "Stopped at a T junction and was knocked down from behind. Bloke said 'sorry, didnt see you, and anyway I'd nearly stopped didn't hit you that hard.' erm, well...my bent bike and the fact that I can barely bloody move says otherwise..and I feel very, very lucky! No more road bike..."

The incident comes a week after TV chef and motoring columnist James Martin publicly apologised for antagonising cyclists.

Reviewing an electric car in the Mail on Sunday he wrote about forcing a group of cyclists off the road.

"Knowing they wouldn't hear me coming," he wrote, "I stepped on the gas, waited until the split second before I overtook them, then gave them an almighty blast on the horn at the exact same time I passed them at speed.

"The look of sheer terror as they tottered into the hedge was the best thing I've ever seen in my rear-view mirror."

But last week he did a u-turn after Wiggins posted unprintable comments about him on Twitter.

Martin said his piece was supposed to be humorous and not intended to cause offence.

Today, a Lancashire Police spokesman said: "We got a call at about 10.20am yesterday to Liverpool Road in Rufford, Ormskirk.

"The informant called to say she was on her bike and somebody had driven into the back of her.

"It sounds dramatic but she insisted she didn't need an ambulance - it was bike damage only and no injuries were involved."
