Opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich claims victory in Ukraine

Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich today claimed a slender victory in a presidential poll that could tilt the ex-Soviet state back towards Moscow.

With just over 95 per cent of votes counted, officials gave Mr Yanukovich a margin of 2.6 percentage points over prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is more pro-Western. The narrowness of the victory could encourage Mrs Tymoshenko to contest the result.

International election monitors called the presidential elections "professional, transparent and honest". The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's assessment is likely to increase pressure on Mrs Tymoshenko.
