Parties back call for 20mph London speed limit

Calls to expand the use of 20mph speed limits have been backed by a cross-party alliance of politicians.

Green group Sustrans wants the Mayor to encourage boroughs to adopt 20mph limits. Sustrans wants it to be the default maximum speed across London.

At a Sustrans conference, Labour, Tory, Liberal Democrat and Green politicians backed 20mph. Green mayoral candidate Jenny Jones said: "We have to remove fear and danger and make the roads safer."

A GLA spokesman said that any decision should be made on a borough-by-borough basis, although some targeting around schools might be appropriate.
