Peace talks underway in Bonn

Patrick Hennessey12 April 2012

Delegates to peace talks on the future of Afghanistan were urged today to forge a "truly historic compromise" and provide a political future for the country.

The call came from German foreign minister Joschka Fischer who told delegates, including those from the Northern Alliance and other groups but not the Taliban, that the international community would not leave Afghanistan in the lurch.

He said: "Distinguished guests from Afghanistan, now you have to shoulder your responsibility to pave the way for a peaceful political future. I urge you to forge a truly historic compromise that holds out a better future for your torn country."

Diplomats hope the talks in Bonn could lead to a leadership council and an acting parliament before elections are held.
