Plans for royal wedding campsite anger Clapham locals

Happy campers: Clapham Common could attract 10,000 for three days

Plans for a campsite on Clapham Common to celebrate the royal wedding have outraged residents.

Camp Royale seeks to provide a "sea of tents, Union flags and bunting" for up to 10,000 people from the Thursday to the Sunday. Coaches will be laid on from 35 UK venues.

William Hope, who lives in nearby North Road, said: "The wedding should be a time for the community to have street parties and celebrations - instead the council is offering the common to people who can't afford a hotel."

Organisers of the camp, yet to get Lambeth council written approval, said it would cost £75 to pitch a tent.

Magdelena Davis, 33, from Crescent Lane, said: "Lambeth have sold our community to the highest bidder."
