Police call on locals to name hero's killer

Murdered: war veteran Geoffrey Bacon
12 April 2012

Detectives investigating the shocking murder of a 90-year-old war veteran who was mugged for £40 and his bus pass have appealed to local people to name his killer.

Geoffrey Bacon, who was a driver for Montgomery and Eisenhower in the Second World War, died 11 weeks after he was attacked on the doorstep of his home on the Peabody estate in Camberwell a year ago today.

Detectives are hunting a mugger who followed him from the street and left him lying helpless on the floor with a shattered pelvis.

They believe local people know the name of his attacker and re-issued details of a £20,000 reward for information leading to his conviction.

Detective Inspector Richard Beadle said: "A year on from the awful attack, we still need the assistance of the public to establish who was responsible for ultimately killing him.

"Geoffrey was an honest, decent man who had served his country bravely in the Second World War."

Police described the suspect as a light-skinned black man, aged about 30 to 40. They are linking Mr Bacon's attack to a similar assault on a 66-year-old woman on the Peabody estate. Anyone with information should contact 020 8721 4961, or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
