Police officer lost secret files from car boot

12 April 2012

A POLICEMAN has been disciplined after confidential files were stolen from the boot of his car.

They were taken while the car was parked outside a residential property and were handed into police by a member of the public who found them dumped in a nearby street the following day.

An inquiry by the Information Commissioner's Office found Kent Police to be in breach of the Data Protection Act.

Kent Police has pledged to ensure staff with access to sensitive information outside the office are given secure transportation and storage facilities. The force said the officer had "made a mistake" and been given further training after disciplinary action.
