Police probe toddler's fall to death from fourth floor

Police have launched an investigation into what caused a toddler to plummet to his death more than 30 feet from a fourth-floor flat window.

The 23-month-old boy fell from a balcony window of a flat on a tower block housing estate in Tottenham, fatally fracturing his head on Friday last week.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene in Gloucester Road on the Broadwater Farm Estate.

Paramedics tried to save the child's life but he died the following day in the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

One resident said: "It's an awful thing to happen. People around were inconsolable and could not believe it.

"It was such a big fall that the baby really didn't stand a chance. It's unbelievably tragic."

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "A child had fallen from a window at a block called Croydon on the Broadwater Farm Estate. The baby was taken by ambulance to hospital but died on Saturday. We are still looking into what caused him to fall."

A post mortem examination established the cause of death as head injuries.
