A new portrait of Alan Bennett by artist Sam Dalby is to go on display at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries.

The playwright agreed to sit for the oil painting after learning that it would be sold to raise funds for historic building The Folly in Settle, North Yorkshire.

Dalby said: “Alan has not agreed to sit for many portraits but as it was a cause to which he had previously lent his support, I thought he might be interested.”

The exhibition runs from May 9 to 24.
