Victoria Beckham may not be great at promoting British fashion but she is certainly no slouch at promoting herself as Spain's number one fan. At the British Style Awards, where she was honoured as best-dressed female musician, Mrs Beckham acted more Spanish than a paella. As she collected her award, she said "Hola. Como estas," and her dress was designed by a Madrid-based designer, Hannibal Laguna.

"I'm sure somebody is expecting me to say something controversial and jump in with two feet as I always do," she told the audience of 3,000. After wearing a non-British designer to the British Style Awards, both feet were firmly in her mouth already. "David is not going to win an award for dressing me, just for undressing me. And David, I love you."

Sex And The City star Kim Cattrall, Minnie Driver, Greg Rusedski, Gabriel Byrne and Tamzin Outhwaite were all at the fashion industry's biggest night of the year, at Billingsgate Market.

The ceremony was compered by Pamela Anderson and Richard Bacon. Anderson wore three outfits, each by Stella McCartney. The British designer was making her first public appearance since her wedding earlier this month.

Anderson, a keen animal rights campaigner, had reportedly opted for McCartney for her strict no-fur, no-leather policy.

Alexander McQueen won the most coveted award, British Designer of the Year.

Predictably, the running gags throughout the evening were Anderson's breasts and David Blaine's starvation stunt. "I imagine people here will be saying '44 days without eating - what's all the fuss about?'" quipped Bacon. Despite his comments, most guests tucked into a three-course meal after the ceremony. Mrs Beckham, however, left straight after the awards - perhaps because paella was not on the menu.
