Pressure on James Murdoch as MPs consider new dossier

12 April 2012

James Murdoch's evidence to Parliament over the phone hacking scandal was set to come under fresh scrutiny today with the publication of new documents.

A dossier described as "dynamite" by one MP centres on whether Mr Murdoch was "mistaken" in statements he gave to the Commons last month.

He is accused of misleading the culture, media and sport committee when he denied knowing about a key document in the phone-hacking evidence files.

The so-called "for Neville" email was written by private investigator Glenn Mulcaire and made clear that hacking was more widespread at the News of the World than the company was prepared to admit.

Ex-NoW editor Colin Myler and the paper's former legal manager Tom Crone insisted they showed the memo to Mr Murdoch when he approved an out-of-court settlement with Gordon Taylor, the Professional Footballers' Association chief executive.

The committee met this morning to decide whether to publish fresh statements from figures including Mr Murdoch, Mr Crone and Mr Myler. The MPs were also deciding whether to recall witnesses when Parliament returns from its summer holiday.

Mr Murdoch, the chairman of his father Rupert's News Corporation in Europe, faced immediate calls to be ordered back to the Commons when his evidence was apparently contradicted.

But News International released a statement at the time saying Mr Murdoch stood by his evidence.
