Primark loading bay threat to medieval lane in West End

Miranda Bryant12 April 2012

One of central London's last medieval lanes is under threat from plans for a loading bay for a store in Oxford Street.

Hanway Street is home to independent shops and bars and is a conservation area because of its "intimate character and charm" and "narrow, curving streetscape".

But Primark, which is to open a store in the former Zavvi building, wants to widen the eastern end of the street to allow lorries to make deliveries seven days a week. The proposals come before Westminster planners tomorrow.

Stephen Carter, head of the Hanway Place Residents Association, said: "All the character of the street will be lost because of the congestion."

Tim Derbyshire, 57, whose record shop On The Beat has been in the street for 32 years, said it was a hidden gem. "On Oxford Street there are mega businesses, but you walk down here and it's like you're not in London."
