Profits plunge at NTT DoCoMo

12 April 2012

PROFITS of Japan's mobile phone giant NTT DoCoMo plunged 96% in the six months to end September and the group has slashed its full-year profits forecast after the disappointing take-up of its third generation phones.

The company, which has almost 60% of Japan's mobile market, has been hammered by a massive write-down on its overseas investments. It also disappointed by admitting it expected to sign up only 320,000 3G subscribers in Japan, compared with an earlier forecast of 1.28m.

Profits were 4.17bn yen, (£22.2m), against the 90bn yen earned in the same period last year, although sales edged up 1.9%. It revised its full-year profits forecast from 511bn yen to 182bn yen.
