£700m Victoria Tube station revamp escapes cuts

12 April 2012

The £700million redevelopment of Victoria Tube station will not be scaled down as part of wider spending cuts, transport bosses promised today.

It will take place in stages with construction proper beginning next year. Passengers will have to endure selected closures of parts of the station but it will not be completely shut.

One of the centrepieces for the redevelopment will be new glass entrances — to be completed by 2016 — intended to bring as much light into the station as possible.

The station is often closed temporarily to commuters during peak periods to prevent the platforms from becoming dangerously overcrowded.
