Radio host banned for ‘Nazi’ insult

TALK show host Jon Gaunt has been

The Talksport presenter, who was in care as a child, apologised at the end of his show on Friday after also accusing Redbridge councillor Michael Stark of being an "ignorant pig" in a discussion over plans to stop smokers becoming foster parents.

Mr Stark had said the welfare of young children should be put ahead of the needs of foster families.

Mr Gaunt argued that the policy, which will come into force in January 2010, would deprive children in care of the opportunity of finding a foster home.

The award-winning presenter, who has faced the Broadcasting Complaints Commission five times previously, said: "It's something very close to my heart. I did lose my rag with him. I wish I hadn't but I did."

Mr Stark said it was "completely inappropriate" and "dangerous" to label him a Nazi, but he had not called for the radio host to be
suspended.

"Nazi is not a term that should be used without thinking," Mr Stark said. "We asked for an apology, but have made no complaint and it is up to his employers to decide what is the appropriate action.

"The truth is there are a number of local authorities already doing what we are proposing and there is no question of children being taken away from foster parents. We encourage foster parents to try to give up smoking and will help them to achieve it."

A Talksport spokesman said: "When we have all the facts at our disposal, we will take whatever action, if any, that we deem appropriate."
