Return of the Chopper

Raleigh hopes its cult bicycle will win new fans
Metro Reporter13 April 2012

It is as 1970s as Spangles, Abba or the Space Hopper. With its apehanger handlebars, red-trimmed tyres and an elongated seat, it was the epitome of playground cool. Now, it's back.

Raleigh unveiled a re-modelled Chopper bike yesterday in the hope it will inspire a new generation. Launched in 1969, 1.5million were sold before the Nottinghamshire firm halted production in 1984 as BMX took over as the cycle of choice.

But the Chopper has devoted fans - including England goalkeeper David James and Blur's Damon Albarn.

A first run of 2,004 of the new £199.99 model, built by Raleigh in Vietnam, goes on sale next month.
