Rival families start a riot

12 April 2012

Two rival families sparked a riot involving 150 people following a '"Romeo and Juliet"-type dispute.

The massive brawl in Southampton allegedly erupted after an argument between the families over two lovers. Violence escalated and more than 100 family members and neighbours joined the fray, some wielding baseball bats.

They smashed walls and fences for ammunition while officers were pelted with bricks. A policeman and five residents were injured and eight vehicles and a shop damaged. Three men were arrested.
