Robinson is turning to drink

12 April 2012

HAVING made a fortune from TV, former Granada boss and renowned deal maker Gerry Robinson is turning to drink. He becomes chairman of wine and spirits group Allied Domecq in March and will help Allied boss Philip Bowman enliven the group with a string of takeovers.

Robinson, 53, had planned to put his feet up in Ireland, but clearly could not resist the chance to embark on a spending spree with Bowman. At Granada he succeeded in a hotly contested takeover battle for Forte hotels.

Hopes he may work some magic at Allied lifted the shares 9p to 395p. Malibu rum may be a prime target, but more wine brands would also be welcome. Robinson takes over from Sir Christopher Hogg, 65, who retires in March. His salary is likely to be at least as high as the £200,000 earned by Hogg.
