Chris Laker12 April 2012

A decision on the release of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs is likely within days after his case was passed to Justice Secretary Jack Straw, it was revealed today.

Biggs, 79, who is eligible for release on July 3, is on the hospital wing of Norwich Prison.

A Parole Board met to consider his release today and has passed its recommendation to Mr Straw, who has the final say.

A spokesman said: "A Parole Board panel met today to consider the application of Mr Ronald Biggs for release on parole licence.

"As the sentence being served by Mr Biggs is for a period of more than 15 years, the recommendation of the Parole Board panel will be passed on to the Secretary of State for Justice who will make the final decision on release and notify the prisoner.

"Mr Biggs's parole eligibility date is in July 2009."
