Ryanair challenges Lufthansa

BUDGET airline Ryanair started a cut-price ticket war with German carrier Lufthansa after announcing a second continental European hub at Frankfurt's Hahn airport.

Mirroring its marketing attack against the now-bust Belgian flag-carrier Sabena when it opened a hub at Brussels Charleroi earlier this year, Ryanair pledged its one-way tickets would be at least 80% cheaper from Frankfurt's secondary airport than Lufthansa's fares from Frankfurt Main.

Ryanair said it would open up routes from Frankfurt to Stansted, Glasgow and Bournemouth airports and seven other secondary airports in Europe.
