Satnav maker TomTom today admitted using a poster campaign which sends drivers along a bus lane.

The advertisement for TomTom's HD traffic service shows a picture of Trafalgar Square. However, the way indicated takes drivers down a lane reserved for buses which would result in a £120 fine.

The gaffe was spotted by cab driver Russell Wilson who said: "I was sitting in traffic near Trafalgar Square when I saw the poster."

Mr Wilson, 44, from Chelmsford, contacted the firm. He added: "They said they had no way to return my call. It's a shame, maybe I could have driven them round and explained some of the Knowledge to them."

A spokeswoman for TomTom said: "The satnav on the billboard features an old and out of date picture, this was an oversight. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."

It is the latest in a series of satnav gaffes. Other users have crashed, taken detours of thousands of miles and got stuck in country lanes after following electronic directions.
