School at the centre of storm

The director of education for All Souls Primary was shocked when the Evening Standard revealed the number of phone masts surrounding the building.

He immediately pledged to take up the matter with the local education authority. Governors previously felt strongly enough to reject an application for a mast on the school - despite being offered money.

Tom Peryer, director of education for the Diocese of London, which runs the school, said: "Obviously there's concern about masts around schools. It does seem an awful lot. Some parents might want to ask questions. Some people get very upset if they have even one near their school. We will ask questions about this, starting with Westminster council."

Guidelines say mobile phone companies should discuss with a school any proposals near the premises. Mr Peryer said: "I bet they haven't had 83 approaches."
